Why will the new era coined the ‘Quantify Self Movement’ make health management easier and more accessible to us all? 

IT STARTS FROM A BROKEN SYSTEM THAT NEEDS AN ALTERNATIVE

The general public is becoming more health educated, and finally realising the ‘sick care’ system currently in place has very limited knowledge, or a system in place when it comes to prevention.

In addition, more and more people are now becoming aware of the food industry’s practices, which make us buy food-like products that are undermining our health.

The authorities remain without a tangible plan or solution to the disease of our civilisation, the leading cause of death in the world – ‘degenerative diseases’.  They are undisputedly growing and the majority are directly linked to our diet, lifestyle and environment.

THE SOLUTION STARTS WITH US AS EDUCATED, PROACTIVE INDIVIDUALS

The good news is that we now know degenerative diseases are preventable.  We are living in an exciting time; we now have access to a multitude of information at our fingertips within seconds.  The constant and exponential technological evolution and growing access to information makes this even more tangible.

Furthermore, we can use new technology to track information to then feed it back to us, to improve our life.

WE ARE ENTERING THE AREA OF THE ‘QUANTIFY SELF MOVEMENT'

There is a plethora of apps and biometric devices currently available on the market, which can provide you with instant feedback on what you do on a daily basis.

Over the past two years, many ‘giant’ corporations have spent millions in research and development to come up with the best wearable technology devices possible.  The race to the moon between the ‘giants’ is on – from Samsung Gear, FuelBand from Nike, Google tech with the Fitbit and finally Apple entering the gamin in style with the Apple Watch and its health kit, the options are plentiful to choose from.

There is huge growing demand of self data gathering and tracking devices.  All the gear once only available to elite sportspeople is now accessible via Amazon and for a fraction of the price.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR US?

We are becoming real cascades of data – almost half cyborg!  Many people are scared of this evolution.  The rise of the machine!

Some are already thinking of the Terminator scenario, but like it or not – it is happening.

As an optimist, I believe this is part of our evolution; however just like all new technology, it is what we make of it that makes all the difference.  If we are using it for the better of mankind or not.

NEW TECHNOLOGY AS A TOOL TO IMPROVE AND PERSONALISE OUR HEALTH

All this technology is growing at an exponential rate.  We are not far from having a personal robot at home that will specify what food we should eat before our morning run, or will remind us not to forget to eat our greens!  When leaving for the office, it will send us health lunch options available near the office.

Personally, I like to use new technology as a feedback loop (tool) to educate my clients.  Teaching them how to use new technology to empower themselves and make their lives easier.

There are numerous apps and devices available which does the work for you.  

HOW WILL IT BE IN PRACTICE?

Imagine you have gathered all information necessary to optimise your fitness and nutrition.  You have set goals, milestones and rewards along your health optimisation journey (or weight loss goal).  These goals are specific to you, for better results.

Thanks to genetic testing, you know what food to eat and what type of training and recovery is most suitable for you – there is no more guesswork.

You are then able to feed that data back into your device(s) so you can now track and monitor what is specific to you, and you can check if you are in your ‘zone’.

Tailor your reps, your calorie intake for the day, and the type of nutrients you need to optimise your performance.  In addition, you will be able to receive alerts during training i.e. when you reach certain risk zones or fatigue levels that could lead to injury and monitor instantly and more efficiently your lactic acid threshold.

You will also be able to receive instant advice when buying food, indicating to you a risk of high sugar levels if buying that ‘healthily’ packaged drink off the shelves.

Sounds like a science fiction movie?  This is in fact the very imminent future of health and fitness monitoring.

THE POWER OF THE FEEDBACK LOOP

You can feed data by no doing anything else other than carrying the devices with you to then feed the data back to you.  You can literally track and monitor everything from your sleep, your nutrition, and go as far as monitoring the level of nutrients you are consuming during the day, to your posture or your energy output etc.

It is personalised to you.  It will certainly help to improve your daily life by flagging and focusing on the area(s) that need attention.  It’s already easy to use, and it will only get easier in the future.

EMBRACE THE QUANTITY SELF MOVEMENT TO BETTER YOUR HEALTH

Start using these applications and devices as a tool to help you achieve you goals.  If you have not started using any of these apps or devices yet – go for it!

It will really help you to keep track and monitor your progress, as well as keeping you engaged in your health and fitness journey.

You need to have the right tools; however the poison is in the dosage…. manage the technology, do not let it manage you and turn your tracking into an unhealthy obsession.

Don’t be afraid of it, be excited and start using this new technology.
